The banks in Thailand issue debit and credit cards:
The debit card is linked directly to your savings account. This is the card that the bank gives you by default when you open an account. Most foreigners are issued with a non-denominated card. The minimum non-reducible balance in the account must be at least 2,000 baht, otherwise after 6 months, the bank will charge monthly fees until your account reaches zero and the bank may then unilaterally close your account.
A credit card gives you access to credit with a grace period on interest. To qualify for a credit card, you’ll need at least six months’ salary history in Thailand, and at some banks – 12 months.
The procedure for opening a savings account
After completing the prescribed bank form to open an account:
-You will get a bankbook and an ATM debit card at once (without your name on the card).
-Access to online banking. You need to download the bank’s authorised application to your phone in advance, as logging in to the application is subject to approval by the bank manager. You can use the mobile app to pay for a wide range of services.
Also, for further online purchases with your card, you should additionally ask the manager to verify the card or do it yourself on the website of the required bank (section: Verified by Visa). We recommend that you set up an OTP code (SMS code to confirm the online transaction) so that no unauthorised money transfers can take place without your consent.
Transfers from account to account are instant and free of charge. The account number used to make the transfer is the Account Number, which will be shown in your bankbook, or you can see it in your phone’s online app.
